If You Are A Freelance PHP ProgrammerThen start shouting that you are! Tell everybody you know. Really. Let me explain why I think this.
It all started with...
Hell no, I'm not going to post my whole programming history, and how things started. But a few months ago, I started doing some freelance work for people I knew. Or actually, for someone my grandmother knew. The one I did the job for was artist, and needed a site so people could contact her. I earned some cash, and both parties were happy.
So what does this tell us? I told my grandmother that I was doing web programming. My grandmother told her other gray fellows (no offence, but their here IS gray). And one of them responded saying she needed a site for her work.
I obviously told my father and mother too. My father switched jobs a few months ago, and 2 weeks ago, he came back from work saying he had a little job for me, from his work. Some software package didn't include a search function into their manual, and of course, that starts to frustrate. Thus, my father told that his son (thus me) did programming, and that he would ask me. So I created a search function, and got some extra cash.
I was on a survival camp with school, and had to help with cleaning the bicycles (I actually had to cook, but well, cooking with 6 people was too much...). I found one of the instructors a nice guy, and I had to help him with cleaning the bicycles. I didn't care. So we went talking, and he asked me what I did. I said that I do web programming. And he said, hey, I need a website!
Third job. And how did I got these 3 jobs? Because I told everyone what I do!
Moral of this story, tell everyone what you do! People will spread the word, or at least when someone is talking about the related category (in this case programming), he/she will recommend you.

true, true, this even happens when you don't want the business.for example I DON'T want to make websites for people and relatives and friends know I make websites and tell their friends and what happens like last friday night when i visit my sisters?
"hey mark, the aabbcc company tom works for needs a website and are willing to pay for it."
moral of my story, networking and getting the word out WORKS! sometimes too good.

Haha, yeah, that's true. It really works, but in your case it works too good. You have "better" things to do, then keep creating sites for other people. That takes long, and will only give you some money on the short term.In my case, that doesn't really matters. I have the time, and I don't need long term money to live off (for now!), that's why I have parents :P

My business started by word of mouth courtesy of my Mum telling the doctors in her workplace of what I did. My first client (who has 4 sites with me) is still my client and one of the biggest income. I've only had one client that I gained without them hearing of me from someone else. Everyone else is word of mouth. There's nothing better than a personal recommendation.

@sarah "There's nothing better than a personal recommendation.". True. Most of word has the most authority, because you know that person, and if you know someone, you trust it more then some random website saying "hey, go to my blog!" or "hey. I'm offering this service for only $xx,xx".And that's the great part of word of mouth, the authority.

As a fellow 15-year-old web developer, I share your opinion about getting the word out. However...DON'T BE OVERZEALOUS, and KNOW YOUR CLIENTS. I am currently dealing with 5-10 clients, plus exams, plus keeping grades up, plus dealing with nondecisiveness on the half of my clients. I think my hair will become like your grandmother's very soon :P
Just some food for thought.

Well, the fun with word-to-mouth, is that you know many of the people. And if not, you can ask the one he/she was referred by :) ATM, I'm not doing anything for other clients, only 1 project, and I'm blogging for 2 blogs (this one, and another one of myself).Over here, we have some really good hair sprays to color your hair Jason. Want me to send some over to your place :) ?

heh I did some random freelance-TYPE of stuff when I was around 12, my grandma's office thing needed me to learn about Google Earth, which wasn't that hard. Just had to know what type of code it used and REALLY easy stuff for 8 bucks an hour for 5 hours. 40 bucks for free? Sure, I'll take your money
